"Low vision" is a catch-all phrase referring to any vision disorder that cannot be corrected with refractive glasses. It applies to people considered legally blind, those with cone dystrophies, macular degeneration, glare sensitivity, color vision deficiencies, neurological disorders, and more.
Low vision is a small but growing market in the vision care industry with high impact potential. Factors driving growth include aging population demographics, modern diseases such as diabetes, and increased discretionary spending on quality-of-life-enhancing technologies.
As with color blindness, which is a cone-contrast deficiency, people with low vision can benefit from enhanced spectral contrast, which improves the signal-to-noise ratio in the retinal cone signaling pathways. I saw an opportunity to adapt EnChroma's lens technology for color blindness to create a new line of functional eyewear to help people with low vision better manage glare and navigate the world. The result is the EnChroma Lx Series Lenses.
